  • We Interviewed the 4Sisters Employees, Here's What They Had to Say

Have you ever wondered what it takes to work on a rice farm? We interviewed a few 4Sisters Rice employees to pull back the curtain and give you a little insider's view of what a day in the life of these workers looks like!  Meet Matt Fowler - Operations Manager at 4Sisters Rice, husband, father to 4 girls, and has been with Kennedy Rice for 8 years.    1. Can you share your journey and how you became the Operations Manager at 4Sisters? My rice journey began a little over 8 years ago as a shipping technician.  I was interested in doing more than loading trucks and cleaning up, so I spoke to Marley Oldham, our current Chief Operating Officer  after 6 months of employment and explained that I wanted to pursue learning more about the rice industry.  From that point, Marley became my mentor.  Our conversation aligned with the start of 4Sisters launching a few retail offerings and the Kennedy’s invested in packaging equipment.  Marley promoted me to Packaging Operator and I learned to operate the two packaging lines we had.  Once again, I expressed my interest in learning and taking on more responsibility so I was promoted to Shipping Manager where I learned more about the logistics side of our business. I worked in this role for roughly two years before being promoted to Quality and Food Safety Director, which required me to think about rice differently.   I can best explain this role by saying, “The rice we mill, ship, and package every day is eaten by my wife and children, so I carry that with me every day.”  As Quality and Food Safety Director, I gained one of the most important perspectives in the rice milling and packaging industry. It required me to look at each step in the process with a magnifying glass to identify potential risks and mitigate them in the most efficient and effective ways. In January of 2023, Marley approached me with an opportunity I was incredibly humbled to receive, Operations Manager of Kennedy Rice Mill and 4Sisters Rice where I oversee the company's operational activities, optimize day-to-day activities, and streamline workflows to enhance the profitability of 4Sisters. 2. Could you shed some light on the rice milling process and how 4Sisters ensures the highest quality for its products? An exceptional number of practices are implemented to make sure the rice we produce and package is of the highest quality.  When a truck arrives with paddy rice, it’s weighed and samples are taken to assess the overall quality and safety.  Once the truckload has been approved, it’s dumped into 1 of 4 million lb tanks for staging before milling.  The rice is then conveyed in the mill and goes through 6 separate magnets throughout the process to eliminate all ferrous metals from the rice.  Destoners are then used to remove any stones left from the field.  During the entire milling process, samples are taken to reassess the quality and safety of the rice.  Once the milling process is complete, we convey the rice to our shipping building and store it in 1 of 14 tanks that hold over 7 million lbs of rice.  From the shipping building the rice goes through multiple metal detectors and is reassessed for quality and safety, before going in a truck, railcar, or 4Sisters package. 3. What is your favorite 4Sisters rice variety and your go-to rice recipe? Jasmine is my favorite variety and my favorite recipe is a tie between Gumbo and Red Beans and Rice. 4. What is the most fulfilling part of working at 4 Sisters? The people. I’ve attended several speeches that our CEO has given and one of my favorite quotes from her is, “Take a little grain and make a big difference in the world.”  The photo below captures the essence of what we do at Kennedy Rice Mill and 4Sisters Rice.  We have an outreach program offering our new employees guidance at work, home, and for their souls. We mill and package the highest quality and best-tasting rice, while elevating the potential of our employee's lives. I am honored to work alongside men and women truly carrying the goal Meryl set out to achieve! Meet Jason Bankston - 4Sisters Director of Warehouse & Logistics, husband and father of 2, has been with Kennedy Rice for 11 years.    1. How did you become the Director of Warehousing and Logistics at 4Sisters and what does your role involve? I began my career with Kennedy Rice Mill in August of 2012 as a Mill Operator. 2 months later, I was moved into Logistics and By-Product Sales. I held this position for ten years. During this time, I worked alongside the Mill Manager to coordinate all shipments of finished products via railroad and over-the-road trucking as well as by-products to maintain the mill’s efficiency. My involvement in the daily planning of mill production allowed me to move into operational management duties that eventually transitioned into the role of Assistant Mill Manager. Once the Kennedy family decided to pursue the packaging business, I began working directly with upper management and sales to assist in daily communications with onboarding along with scouting potential new customers to grow the 4 Sisters’ brand. Managing the production and planning of the packaging business allowed me to gain an in-depth knowledge of this business from the day-to-day mechanical processes to each customer’s specific needs. As the packaging business continued to grow, the need for expansion grew and we decided to purchase warehousing to provide the best rice in customer order fulfillment allowing me to transition into the Warehousing and Logistics Director. My role involves working with all parties involved in the production, packaging, and transportation teams of 4 Sisters Rice to provide the best rice in quality and customer satisfaction. This includes daily visual inspection of each load prepared and communication with warehouse personnel for timely shipping and loading. I’m responsible for our warehouse team maintaining a daily inventory reported to our packaging production team to manage appropriate inventory levels per customer orders. My goal each day is to provide full attention to all our customer needs and support each one of our team members to get the job done with safety, quality, and efficiency. 2. Can you walk us through the journey of rice from the farm to the warehouse, and eventually to the customers? At 4Sisters Rice, the work starts before the farmers even plant our rice. Our team spends countless hours of research on the type of rice that would provide the best quality and taste for our customers. Once we select these varieties, the farmers begin planting our fields. When harvest starts, the farmers bring the rice to our drying facilities before storing and milling. The rice used for packaging is stored in lots of the selected variety to make sure that our packaged rice will perform the same in our mill as well as when it’s time to cook. We then move the rice by truck to the mill where we use a closed conveying system that serves in multiple capacities to help prevent foreign materials and minimize dust. Once the rice is cleaned, milled, and sorted for quality it goes to our clean rice building and is stored where it’s ready for bulk shipment or packaging. The packaging building has a tank farm that will receive transferred rice to be stored until it’s time to package. These tanks directly send rice to the machines that form and fill 4Sisters Rice. Once a truckload is completed (42,000lbs) it’s then sent to our warehouse to be prepared for shipment to the final customer, you and your family! 3. How does 4Sisters prioritize efficiency and sustainability in its warehouse operations? Our warehouse receives orders several weeks in advance to allow enough time to prepare each shipment. The rice is then staged near the load-out area of the warehouse, allowing warehouse personnel to load a truck in the shortest amount of time. To prioritize sustainability, we operate electric forklifts and use LED lighting throughout our warehousing division. 4. What measures are taken to maintain the quality of the rice during transportation and storage? The product is loaded on staggered pallets and secured on each truck in a way that prevents shifting, leaning, or sliding during transit. We use air dunnage bags between each pallet to take up any space between products to also help with shifting. All of this helps ensure that our product is delivered in the same manner it leaves our warehouse. Our warehouse facility is also cleaned and inspected daily to prevent any type of threat to the quality of our products. 5. What do you find most rewarding about working as Director of Warehousing and Logistics within the rice industry?  As a parent and understanding the importance of protecting my children and what they eat, I find my role rewarding knowing that I have a big role in providing the best quality rice for families and children worldwide. 6. What is your favorite 4Sisters rice variety and your go-to rice recipe? Regular long-grain rice for me! My go-to recipes are Hamburger steak over rice and gravy or red beans and rice! Meet Matt Spillers - 4Sisters Logistics Manager, father of 3 girls, Veteran, and has been with 4Sisters Rice for 4 years. 1. How did you become the Logistics Manager at 4Sisters, and what does your role involve? I retired from the Army in 2014 and as part of my offboarding, I had to submit a resume to my veteran counselor. I didn’t have plans to go back to work but life happens when you’re making plans.  I received a call from COO, Marley Oldham, in October 2019 asking if I would have a sit down with him and Meryl. That same day, my dad had just been released from care after major back surgery. Tending to him and helping my mom had been my focus up until then.  The day before I received Marley’s call my 3 daughters sat me down and told me I needed to find something to do, as they were getting older and needed less attention. The timing couldn’t have been more on point.  I had only briefly worked in logistics in the Army as my primary job was in combat arms. An injury in Afghanistan caused me to have to train in another field, if not for that, I doubt I would be here in this role now. My role in this company is centered on the 4Sisters brand.  Processing orders is one of the main things that requires the majority of my time, making sure the right products and quantities are pulled, staged, labeled, and routed correctly within our allotted timeframe. Creating a framework of carriers, and maintaining constant communication with them and my team at the warehouse is paramount.  I spend time tracking orders and informing our buyers on timeframes of delivery or any delay that may have occurred.  Training is something else I do daily, not just for my self-improvement but also training my employees to do my job. I need to make sure that if something unexpected happens to me, someone has the knowledge to step up and take over with little to no delays for our customers.  2. Can you walk us through the journey of rice from the farm to the warehouse, and eventually to the customers? Once the seeds are planted in the fields they go through 3 stages of growth, vegetative growth, reproductive, and ripening (grain filling), before being harvested. Once harvested typically in the fall, the rice goes through several stages such as drying, cleaning, grading, storing, weighing, and milling, then it’s off to packaging. Once packaged, the pallets are loaded onto our trucks at the mill and moved to our warehouse about an hour away.  We receive advanced notice on what’s coming with the appropriate paperwork, including the security seal number, which we verify once the truck reaches our facility.  We operate on a FIFO (first come first out) principle, as well as a color-coded system to ensure that the customers are always getting fresh products and keeping our stock rotated.  Once the product has reached our facility, it’s staged in a designated area based on which product it is. I review and process orders, push those out to the warehouse for picking, route them with carriers for pick up, and finally off for delivery to our customers!  3. How does 4Sisters prioritize efficiency and sustainability in its logistics operations? This is one of our biggest goals. We do this with redundancy and attention to detail.  Every order is triple-checked for accuracy in product type, product count, ship dates, and shipment configuration, and then it’s rechecked. We look at which carrier has the best relationship and on-time schedule to mitigate post-must-arrive-by-date deliveries based on where the shipment is going and to what customer. 4. What do you find most rewarding about working in logistics management within the rice industry? We maintain a food-grade warehouse where housekeeping is just as much a part of our focus as any other aspect of our process.  Simply put, we keep it clean, if we aren’t processing and pulling orders, then we’re maintaining our warehouse and our grounds.  We make sure the trailers that we put our products on are clean, and free of holes/leaks, smells, odors, allergens, or debris. Any of these things will cause a trailer that is hauling our product to be rejected and a recovery requested.  This isn’t something we take lightly and we react accordingly for the benefit of our customers when we encounter any such situation. 5. What measures are taken to maintain the quality of the rice during transportation and storage? No day is ever the same as the day before, there’s always new challenges that arise that require some analytical thought and a healthy dose of can-do attitude.  Small mistakes have big consequences, the reward comes from small wins every day that we’ve done right by our customers and our company. 6. What are your favorite 4Sisters rice variety and your go-to rice recipe? Our Jasmine is my favorite. I am a sucker for some good Jambalaya. What questions do you have for our employees? • How to Cook Fluffy Jasmine Rice to Perfection

Ever wonder how to cook fluffy jasmine rice to perfection? This Asian staple is a favorite for many for its flavor and fluffy texture but cooking Jasmine rice to perfection requires some attention to detail. Not to worry though, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process to perfectly cooked fluffy and fragrant Jasmine rice for every meal! Step 1: Proper Measurement Start by measuring the desired quantity of Jasmine rice using a standard measuring cup. For every cup of rice, you’ll need 2 cups of water. Step 2: Cover, Boil, and Cook Time for the fun part! In a heavy-bottomed saucepan with a tight-fitted lid, add the rice. Pour in the measured water, place the saucepan over medium-high heat, cover, and bring the water to a boil. Optional: Add salt and butter and stir. Step 3: Reducing Heat and Simmering Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with the lid. Allow the rice to simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes. Avoid peeking or stirring during this process as it can interfere with the cooking process and result in unevenly cooked rice. Step 4: Resting and Fluffing After about 20 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice rest for another 5 minutes with the lid on. This step allows the rice to steam further, resulting in a fluffy and evenly cooked texture. After resting, carefully remove the lid, savoring that delicious jasmine rice aroma sometimes compared to freshly popped popcorn, and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains without breaking them. Step 5: Serving and Enjoying Your perfectly cooked Jasmine rice is now ready to be served alongside your favorite dishes. Whether you pair it with stir-fried vegetables, curry, or grilled meat, the fragrant and light texture of Jasmine rice will complement any meal. Additional Tips: For a more aromatic flavor, you can add a few pandan leaves or a strip of lemon zest to the rice before cooking. Adjust the water and cooking time based on personal preference to achieve your desired level of tenderness. For best shelf life, store uncooked rice in the refrigerator after opening. Follow these instructions for your next Jasmine rice meal and, we promise your result will be a fluffy, fragrant perfectly cooked batch of Jasmine rice every time. • Brown Rice vs. White Rice: What's the Difference?

Have you ever wondered what makes brown rice brown rice? Or how white rice compares? While there are thousands of rice types around the world, today, we want to cover two of the most popular choices found in almost anyone’s pantry- brown rice and white rice. These pantry staples have been gracing our plates for centuries, but what exactly sets them apart, and how do their health benefits differ? Let’s explore the key differences between the two grains so you can walk away with a better idea of what you’re eating when you whip up your next go-to rice dish! Brown Rice: A Whole-Grain Delight Brown rice is often referred to as "whole-grain" rice because it retains the bran layer, germ, and endosperm. Here's what you need to know: 1. Nutrient Rich Because the bran layer remains intact, brown rice is a nutritional powerhouse packed with essential nutrients like vitamins B1, B3, and B6, as well as minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese.1 2. If you’re wondering how that makes a difference and how it compares to its brown counterpart, read on: 1. Faster Cooking Without the bran layer and germ, white rice cooks faster, so it’s often used for dishes where quick prep is needed or when you’re on the go. Make sure to keep your eye on the pot; white rice can be easy to overcook if you’re not paying attention! 2. Mild Flavor White rice boasts a milder flavor and a softer texture, making it an ideal side to various dishes as it won't overpower the flavors of your favorite meals. This versatile side dish complements many different recipes; it’s an easy add-on. 3. Easier Digestibility Do you suffer from a sensitive stomach or digestive issues? • 4 Facts about Organic White Rice You Probably Didn’t Know

The hot debate between white rice vs. brown rice has raged on for years. Although brown rice is often touted as the healthier choice (don’t get me wrong, it has its merits), we wanted to take a deeper look at the many benefits white rice offers, making it a super healthy rice choice. For the nutritional benefits and options for cooking our Organic Brown Rice, read this. Here are 4 facts about organic white rice that you probably didn’t even know!1 1. Digestibility: In a previous blog, we shared how brown rice is just white rice with the bran and germ still intact. This makes white rice way more digestible than brown rice. The milling process removes the outer bran layer, which can be hard to digest for some people with sensitive digestive systems. 2. Lower in anti-nutrients: White rice contains fewer anti-nutrients compared to brown rice. Anti-nutrients are compounds that can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients. By removing the bran layer, white rice can absorb minerals like zinc, copper, iron, magnesium, niacin, and calcium. 3. Quick energy source: White rice is an excellent source of carbohydrates, offering a quick and easily accessible energy boost. This makes it an ideal choice for athletes and individuals with high energy expenditure. 4. Gentle on the stomach: If you're prone to upset stomachs or gastrointestinal issues, white rice is often recommended due to its bland nature and low fiber content, which can be soothing and easy on the stomach. __________________ 1Eating Well 4Sisters Organic White Rice: Our 4Sisters Long Grain Organic White Rice is sustainably grown with no chemicals or fertilizers used in the farming process; it’s the perfect alternative for the health-oriented, environmentally conscious rice lover. • What does a day in the life on a rice farm look like? Read this!

Nestled in the heart of Northeast Louisiana lies the 4Sisters Farm, a place where rice farming isn't just about swampy lands, combines, and levees. It's a way of life. To gain insight into the day-to-day of working on this unique Louisiana farm, we sat down with our 4Sisters Rice Farm Manager, Chanel Carter, who took us on a visual journey through a typical day at 4Sisters Rice. Rise and shine, and check the weather As the sun peeks over the horizon, a new day begins at 4Sisters Rice. The life of a Farm Manager is as dynamic as the changing seasons. Your primary responsibility? To cultivate the best rice crop possible while ensuring the integrity of the entire farm, which means taking care of both your people and your crop. The day starts with a glance at the weather forecast and the latest agricultural news, essential for planning daily operations. Clear communication and checking in with the crew to confirm tasks, whether it's planting, coordinating sprays, or inspecting the fields, ensures everyone knows their role and understands their daily goals. Flexibility is key on the farm, as priorities will shift as rapidly as the weather can. During different times of the year, the focus varies. “In some seasons, you're deeply involved in reporting and collaborating with government agencies to certify your crops; other seasons are more focused on the fields, drying them for the year’s harvest or preparing them for the following harvest.” The Rice Lifestyle: from Planting to Harvesting Rice cultivation at 4Sisters Farm is all about following nature’s lead, with each season offering its unique challenges and rewards. Planting begins in the Spring from April to May preparing the soil and the land for a summer-fall crop. The fields are prepared by removing rocks and weeds and leveling the land for a flat growing surface. The growing season unfolds in the Summer from May to June; the maturity date on most grains is typically about 120 days. With rice being a semi-aquatic plant, the paddy fields are flooded to nurture the rice's growth and manage pests and weeds. Growing rice in water has some of the most optimal conditions for producing high yields. As Fall rolls around, the rice reaches maturity, and the water is then released and drained to harvest the crop using our tailwater recovery system you can read more about it here. This water is then reused to create a habitat for numerous aquatic species or for flooding the fields for the next growing season. The grain is then transported directly from the field to our farm elevator in Mer Rouge, where it's then dried, tempered, and milled to maintain its quality. In the Winter, from December to January, fieldwork takes a pause as conservation efforts and planning for next year’s harvest take center stage. The 4Sisters rice fields along the Mississippi Flyway serve as vital stopovers and sanctuaries for local Louisiana wildlife such as alligators and crawfish and a number of migratory birds such as waterfowl, egrets, dowitchers, plovers, sandpipers, avocets, yellowlegs, white belly whistling ducks, red-winged blackbirds, roseate spoonbills, and even some animals on the extinct list such as the Limpkin bird. Louisiana is a coastal state so pretty much any shorebird that comes through the state makes its first stop here in these rice fields as they make their way back north in the springtime, then they bottleneck right here again as a last stop before they migrate across the Gulf of Mexico. During these end-of-year/new-year preparations is also when decisions on contracts, acreage, and grain varieties are made to meet supply chain needs. Harnessing Sustainability, Community Engagement, and Technology With a growing global population, rice remains a staple household food, and with traditional rice farming practices being outdated and heavily intensive on the environment, one of our biggest priorities at 4Sisters Rice is making sure we continue to innovate how we grow sustainably on the farm while maintaining the best crop possible. Sustainability and community support are integral to the 4Sisters Rice mission. The farm engages in various sustainable initiatives, including donations to the local food bank, inviting team members to participate actively in community projects, and sponsoring local events. During National Rice Month this year, we donated two pallets of 4Sisters rice, feeding over 13,000 people in the local community. Yearly contributions to organizations like the Reece Kemmerly Foundation and the Local Food Bank are one of our favorite ways to give back. Farming over 2,000 acres of land successfully also requires the need for cutting-edge technology. “When we operate as many acres as we do, it’s hard to really see the full picture of the health of all of our fields. A lot of times we’ll be driving around the edge of the fields, and we can see the outside of the fields, but we don't really know what’s going on on the inside. The top-down imagery from our satellite imagery shows us the health of the crop on the entire field, and this is extremely helpful.” This type of satellite imagery technology ensures no detail goes unnoticed, even in vast fields, and helps identify crop health and stress areas. We also use John Deere's My Operation platform which allows for remote monitoring of farm machinery and real-time data on machine performance and field progress. This not only optimizes efficiency but also allows Chanel to feel like she can multiply her efforts by keeping an eye on operations from anywhere. The 4Sisters Rice Varieties We produce two main varieties of rice here at 4Sisters Rice, each with distinct flavors and qualities. Long-grain rice is the foundation for white and brown rice, offering a comforting and homey flavor, what you would use to cook your gumbos and rice bowls. Jasmine rice, on the other hand, is aromatic with a slightly floral note, making it an excellent choice for dishes with a hint of spice. Looking for some rice recipe ideas? Here are some of our favorite recipes: Halibut Taco Bowl using our Jasmine Rice Spinach, Sausage, and Rice Muffins using our Organic Brown Rice Chicken Pie with Crispy Rice Crust using our Organic White Rice Quality and Safety at 4Sisters Rice The quality and safety of our crop and facilities is extremely important to us at 4Sisters Rice. We’re a BRC-certified facility (Global Standard for Food Safety), an internationally recognized mark of food quality, safety, and responsibility. We’re Non-GMO certified meaning all of our products are made without genetic engineering and adhere to certain standards of testing, traceability, and segregation. We’re also proud to be a gluten-free and allergen-free facility avoiding any form of cross-contamination. At the farm level, we’re QAI (Quality Assurance International) certified, an international organic production certification. Each year all of our facilities have inspections by our certification body, and we hold ourselves accountable to these standards always ready and prepared for an audit. We asked Chanel more about her personal experience as Farm Manager at 4Sisters Rice and here’s what she had to share: What’s one of your favorite memories on the farm as Farm Manager at 4Sisters Rice? “Bringing someone new to the farm, maybe someone who’s never been on a rice farm, and being able to share with them where the rice they're eating is coming from, it’s an eye-opening experience for people. This is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Also, here’s my toddler eating hack if you need to get them to eat something - show them how their food is grown and where it comes from, and they will eat it. My kids’ favorites are the Butter Belle white rice pouch, followed by the Chelsea Cheese cheesy brown rice pouch. ” What advice would you give to someone interested in getting involved in rice farming and rice agriculture? “Get out on the farm, reach out to us, and experience it for yourself. It’s like teaching someone how to ride a bike; the person who gets on it every day is going to be light years ahead of the person who only gets on it once a year. Get outside, put your boots on, and get out there!” It’s one thing to read about farming, study it, and listen to podcasts, but it’s way different when you’re actually out there getting your hands dirty; there’s no substitute for hands-on experience and a deep connection to the land. At 4Sisters Rice, the farm isn't just a place we call work; it's a community, a steward of sustainability, and a provider of nourishment, a home for the waterfowl. It's a story of hard work, dedication, and a love for the land and our people that resonates with everyone who steps foot on this Louisiana gem. Fun 4Sisters Rice facts Did you know that white rice and brown rice come from the same grain? White rice is just brown rice without the bran and germ layers. All of our rice by products go somewhere else on the supply chain whether it's for chicken bedding, biofuel, or soil nourishment. Our rice fields provide habitat for over 12 species of migratory birds and a variety of local Louisana wildlife. 4Sisters Rice is now found in over 7,000 stores nationwide and continues to grow. With the rise of online grocery shopping after the pandemic, we’ve also launched our direct-to-consumer online store, where you can find all of our latest products. • Meet the Sisters Behind This Family Legacy Rice Farm

As September arrives, we officially enter into the heart of National Rice Month, a time to appreciate the rich history and significance of this small yet essential staple in our diets, highlight fun and new rice recipes, as well as encourage rice lovers to stock up on their favorite pantry staple. With the launch of our new blog, we’d love to share with you the 4Sisters Rice story and the legacy we work towards every day. Read on as we uncover the story behind these four sisters carrying on their father’s 54-year-old rice farm legacy, as well as the values that shape their commitment to sustainable farming for our future generations. The Family Rice Farm Legacy Elton Kennedy always wanted to be a farmer. He’s the youngest of 3 older sisters and was born into a ministry family in northeast Louisiana, where he raised calves from his uncle’s dairy farm. “When I had an opportunity to lease land with an option to buy in the early 60s in Northeast Louisiana, that’s when it started.” Elton began farming wheat with just a few hundred acres; then, in 1969, he leased rice quota to begin farming rice. Soon after, his career took a momentous leap forward in 1973 when the value of rice increased 2-3 times its historical value. Elton then began a 20-year relationship with Riviana Foods, one of the largest companies specializing in the milling and marketing of rice. This collaboration really propelled him forward and allowed him to foster a wealth of knowledge and expertise in every facet of the rice farming industry. The Kennedy Sisters Elton thought he’d one day have a son to help take over the family business. “As it turns out, having four daughters ended up working out just the same. I am beyond proud of the hard work and dedication they have put into growing what I started back in the 60s, coming together, and building something that will be here long after I’m gone. Working with my girls has been extremely rewarding, and I couldn’t imagine it any other way.” Life growing up on the farm involved “check on the farm” days, office work as teenagers, and lots of one-on-one time with Dad, full of life lessons and farm knowledge. But it wasn’t love at first sight for all four Kennedy Sisters. After 12 years of leaving small-town Mer Rouge for city life, Dad offered Patchez and her husband an opportunity to move back and work with him on the farm. She felt the pull to return home, finding comfort in being surrounded by family and childhood friends. Patchez worked in marketing and packaging for the first 7 years at 4Sisters Rice and now chooses to focus on recipe development due to her background in food and nutrition. Chantel went through her “I can’t wait to get away” phase but soon after met and married her husband, who is now the farm manager. She started as the office secretary, raised her three children, and now holds down the reins as the Sustainability Manager collecting sustainability data on the farm as they perfect their seed-to-table process. Felicity also had her time away from the farm life and worked as an Occupational Therapist for many years until she decided to come aboard as the Brand Ambassador and Co-founder for 4Sisters Rice. Meryl, on the other hand, had other dreams that didn’t necessarily involve farming rice. “He would take me to the farm and ride me around in his truck for hours, trying to teach me about water systems and how to plant rice. To say I was not interested would probably be an understatement, I just didn’t believe that I would enjoy farming, and I really had no other examples of women as farmers.” Meryl had gone on to study at the University of Georgia and had plans to get her master’s degree abroad at Oxford University. Elton, knowing she might never come back, had another idea up his sleeve. He told her he would pay for her graduate studies if she came back from college to work for him for the summer. That’s when everything changed. That summer, Meryl watched in admiration what rice farming really entailed through the eyes of her father. “In the off-season, he was conducting business with people all around the world in his dusty little office in rural Louisiana. I was truly shocked as I watched him hold dynamic conversations on weather patterns globally, the farm bill with politicians nationwide, and trade rice on the Chicago Board of Exchange, all while preparing for the next crop year. He, along with his team, had simply taken a business that they loved and turned it into a thriving enterprise. It was then that I knew that with his support, we could develop this business to the next level. It was always my dad’s dream to have a brand. We just took that dream and made it a reality.” And to the next level, they took it. 4Sisters Rice Envisioning the need to bring sustainable, organic, and conventional rice products to consumers nationwide, the four Kennedy Sisters decided to launch their own retail brand in 2019 and named it 4Sisters Rice. 4Sisters Rice is inspired by the sisters' farm-focused upbringing and the knowledge and care about rice farming their father shared with them at a young age. This women-owned rice brand includes an array of organic, conventional, specialty, and kid-friendly rice varieties. The relationships and connections made through our Women’s Business Enterprise National Council Certification translated into the distribution of our 4Sisters Rice brand to major retailers nationwide, such as Walmart and Kroger. Today, the Kennedy family owns and operates one of the largest rice companies in the US, managing an expanse and a network of local suppliers and family farmers who grow their crop of over 25,000 acres with a state-of-the-art rice mill keeping the Kennedy family agribusiness production flowing which includes rice farming, drying, milling and distribution, grain storage, grain marketing, land management, and real estate. We’ve proudly established fruitful partnerships with renowned national retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Publix, successfully expanding our reach. Sustainable Rice Solutions At 4Sisters Rice, we believe sustainability begins and ends with people. We've expanded our retail offerings to encompass a range of organic and conventional rice options using sustainable farming practices. We use rice hulls and cattle manure to enhance soil quality, have significantly reduced our use of chemicals and fertilizers to protect our soil from erosion and use rainwater and natural water sources to fill reservoirs. We’re aware that there is so much more we could do, and we’re committed to refining our sustainable farming solutions to actively do our part against climate change and to pass our legacy of sustainable farming to the next generation of farmers. To read about our full sustainability story and commitments, go here. Supporting Local Communities At 4Sisters Rice, we’re committed to cultivating not only healthy soils and optimal rice-growing environments, but we also recognize the importance of a thriving community to build a lasting legacy. Our success lies in our community partnerships with like-minded farmers, suppliers, and distributors who share our values. Donations to food banks are a regular practice at 4Sisters Rice. One of our largest fundraisers is for the Boys and Girls Club of North Louisiana. As Meryl and Chantel serve on the Bastrop Committee, and Meryl additionally holds a position on the Louisiana state board, it’s important to the Kennedy sisters, who are mothers themselves, to enhance opportunities, community building, and access to resources for rural children in Louisiana to learn and grow in a healthy environment. We’ve also partnered with United Way and the Salvation Army to provide meals and rice for hungry Americans year-round. In addition, our collaboration with Reece Kemmerly Foundation and the students at Prairie View Academy, who organize an annual food drive in honor of William Reece Kemmerly, has been one of our favorite ways of giving back to the community. This October 2023 marks the 15th anniversary of this food drive, which has served and fed over 900 families since its inception. Today, Meryl, CEO, Founder of 4Sisters Rice, and President of the USA Rice Millers Association (the first woman and youngest person to chair this organization in 123 years) is a fierce advocate for local farms and represents the next generation of farm owners, many of whom have joined the new wave of women farmers. She enjoys mentoring young women pursuing careers in agriculture and speaking to local civic organizations related to rural issues and agriculture. “As agriculture is a predominately male industry, it took a couple of years to find my footing. At some point in everyone’s career, it is easier to quit or tell yourself that it is better to take a backseat position. This is especially true for women; we have lots of outside pressures that hinder us from pushing forward. However, real entrepreneurs and industry changers do not have the luxury of taking a backseat when times get tough. I have found that resilience and sheer perseverance are highly respected by all and will carry you a long way.” Part of the 4Sisters Rice commitment is to pave a path for other women passionate about rice farming but may easily feel intimidated or overwhelmed, especially if they do not see themselves represented in these spaces. 4Sisters Rice is about showing these women that although it may be the road less traveled, it’s possible. “Our father is a true legend and the superhero of our family. It’s an honor to carry on his legacy, but more importantly, to have had the opportunity to work with him daily. He didn’t have to pour his knowledge of a male-dominated industry into four young girls, but he did it anyway. Today, there are more women farmers in this country and globally than ever before in history. It’s our job to encourage young women that they don’t need to be driving the tractor to be a farmer. Life on the farm takes many shapes and forms, and it will take both men and women to drive agriculture literally and figuratively into the next century.” 4Sisters Rice is now found in over 7,000 stores nationwide and continues to grow. • From Seed to Table: Our Sustainable Rice Farming Journey

At 4Sisters Rice, sustainable rice farming isn’t just about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving sustainable water use. It’s about being deeply committed to rewriting the narrative of rice agriculture from seed to table, opening doors for women who might otherwise never have chosen this path if they hadn’t seen the opportunity, and protecting our natural resources while we help feed the world with one of the most universally commonly eaten foods. We’ve come up with a holistic approach to sustainability over the course of our 54-year history, encompassing four key pillars: people, land, water, and energy. Happy People, Nourished Fields At 4Sisters Rice, sustainability begins and ends with people. To provide a wide selection of sustainably grown organic and conventional rice options, it starts with our community. Kennedy Rice is located in the Louisiana Delta, one of the lowest-income areas in the United States. We employ locals with very little access to other opportunities available to them, significantly boosting our local economy and rebuilding rural Louisiana, a very underprivileged area of the country. Aside from employing our local people, we take pride in using farming methods that will allow us to continue feeding the world and our rural communities for years to come. Our mill embraces a closed-loop farming method that uses every part of the rice to nourish both people and animals generating very little by-product waste in the process. With rice by-products used for animal feed, alcohol, and rice flour, we lose less than 1% of rice grain during the entire milling process. Today, Meryl, CEO, Founder of 4Sisters Rice, and President of the USA Rice Millers Association (the first woman and youngest person to chair this organization in 123 years), is a fierce advocate for local farms and represents the next generation of farm owners, many of whom have joined the new wave of women farmers. Meryl enjoys mentoring young women pursuing careers in the field and speaking to local civic organizations related to rural issues and agriculture. We’ve also been fortunate enough to be a part of Kellogg’s Ingrained™ program, a $2 million, five-year collaboration with Kellogg Company and Walmart, where rice farmers in the Lower Mississippi River Basin are rewarded for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through their rice farming operations. Part of our goals in this program are to commit to fertilization optimization on 2000 acres as well as a 5% increase in average fleet efficiency at Kennedy Rice by 2025 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030. Land: Stewardship of the Earth As stewards of the land we farm, we’re committed to working together towards a common goal: taking care of our land and feeding communities with healthy, nutrient-rich rice. One of our favorite sustainable practices for soil regeneration is adding rice hulls mixed with chicken litter back into the soil to create a nutrient-rich soil ecosystem for the organic rice we cultivate. Rice hulls are a hard rice coating waste product from rice production known for being one of the most sustainable soil amendments improving drainage, water holding capacity, and aeration. As they break down, they feed the soil adding nourishment to strengthen plant wall cells and build resiliency against drought and heat. We also use cattle manure to balance and maintain appropriate pH levels in the soil, and we’ve reduced our use of chemicals and fertilizers to protect our soil from erosion and to conserve our water resources. At 4Sisters Rice, we’re committed to working with a vast network of sustainable and climate-friendly farms and growers who are all implementing practices that are unique to their farm, doing the best they can with the resources that they have. Every farm is different, and they each have a targeted approach to know they’re giving the land the best result. Water: Nature’s Lifeline Rice farming can be very water intensive if the appropriate water efficiencies aren’t put into place. We believe it’s critical to use water in the most efficient and effective way possible at 4Sisters Rice in order to protect the delicate balance of water use and rice farming. Here, we rely on rainwater to fill our reservoirs, use naturally flowing water sources such as bayous, rivers, and streams, and avoid removing vital nutrients from the water table for our operations. When Elton Kennedy started growing rice, part of the process of working with the land and water sources involved innovating efficiencies and more sustainable uses of water. Elton invented a unique method of pumping excess water from our natural water sources to store for later in times of need. Today, we’ve continued to build on what Elton started 30 years ago, using reservoirs that span over 100 acres to retain water using the tailwater recovery method. This sustainable water use method is a system of ditches and pipelines collecting tailwater into a storage reservoir to use for irrigation for our next season and to provide a water source for our biodiversity on the farm. We also grow our rice in Zero Grade Fields, meaning we level our fields as a way to reduce and conserve our water. Pioneering Energy Solutions In an effort to help stabilize climate change, we’re also deeply committed to continuously improving our energy efficiency standards and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. A few of our energy efforts we’re proud of include: Transitioning 100% of our operations at our Mill and packaging facilities to use energy-efficient LED lighting. Adopting battery-powered forklifts and using diesel emission fluids (DEF) in our tractors. Currently, we’re in the process of transitioning from diesel pumps to electric ones. Practicing precision farming using RTK John Deere technology to help optimize seed placement more efficiently. Using satellite elevators to minimize transportation-related emissions. Sourcing the majority of what we grow within 20 miles of the farm, significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. This not only supports our local vendors but also keeps our supply chain more sustainable and stable. We’re also currently in the process of establishing a better baseline data set so that we can reduce our CO2 emissions by 50% within 10 years. Some of the projects we are looking at include cleaner fossil fuels, higher CO2 sequestration plants, and a reduction in Methane production. Embracing a Sustainable Rice Farming Legacy Sustainable rice farming comes with its setbacks and obstacles; there’s nothing easy about it, but what we've discovered along the way is that it’s possible. Together we can overcome the obstacles, whether it’s donating to our local community, collaborating with our local universities, or working with other growers to put together events and programming. It takes a village to continue improving our sustainability practices while meeting the needs of the community which is a living ecosystem of its own. At 4Sisters Rice, we're not just committed; we're enthusiastic about the future of sustainable rice farming. The more we can continue to strengthen our brand experience and open opportunities for others, the more we’ll begin to see strong demand for better rice farming practices, setting a sustainable standard for southern rice in the US. We are 4 Sisters who grew up on our father’s Louisiana rice farm, a farm founded back in 1964. Today, we share our own story with the launch of our retail rice brand, 4Sisters Rice. With 4Sisters, we envisioned the need to sustainably bring organic and natural rice products to consumers nationwide, while also improving the environment. We brought this idea to life by working with local suppliers and family farmers who share our vision of growing select rice varieties that consistently cook and taste the best. Shop 4Sisters organic, natural, specialty, and kid friendly rice varieties in grocery stores nationwide!
